Visit the Victor Pasmore Murals in The Customer Service Centre Civic Centre

Commissioned by - NCC from the world famous Victor Pasmore for the opening of our unique building 14th November 1968  

Wall sized murals filling either end of the hall, originally the rates hall. Pasmore’s work of the 50s and 60s concentrated on the production of projective relief constructions and murals. Pasmore was one of the most well known British artists of the period. Born in 1908 3rd December in Chelsham, Surrey.  He was appointed Head of Painting at the University of Durham at Newcastle in 1953 - 1960.  Pasmore's innovative work on the "developing Process" was recognised internationally as being of importance and in 1959, he was awarded the CBE.  He continued to exhibit his own art works in various venues in Britain and other countries, including the 5th International Art Exhibition in Tokyo; "Art since 1945" in Kassel, West Germany; and in 1960, represented Britain at the 30th Venice Biennale which later travelled through Europe.  In 1990 and 1991, he had exhibitions in the National Gallery, London and the Serpentine Gallery, London. 

His work continues to be on permanent exhibition in the Laing Art Gallery, Newcastle upon Tyne, and most recently as part of an exhibition of Modern Art at the Hatton Gallery, Newcastle upon Tyne from July-August 2012.
